Can overseas Malaysians contribute?

Writer: Tricia Yeoh
Published: Fri, 02 Nov 2012
At the Singapore FreedomFilmFest 2012 where the three documentaries were screened (including The Rights of The Dead, on the late Teoh Beng Hock’s story), a sizeable number of Malaysians interspersed the audience. Roughly making up 20% of the crowd size, the question-and-answer session following the screening reminded me of the aspirations Malaysians living overseas continue to have about their country, back home.

The interactions I have with Malaysians in Singapore usually centre on whether or not things are improving back home. During the discussion, one person even asked if life in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore is better for me as a young Malaysian. There is a genuine sense of struggle that I felt amongst them – the emotional ties they have with their tanahairku, but yet making the tough decision to leave because of better salaries and an education system and other reasons like marriage.

The World Bank report on Brain Drain released last year said that out of the one million Malaysians living abroad, close to 60% are in Singapore, out of whom almost 90% are Chinese. Two out of ten Malaysians with a tertiary degree migrated in 2000 to Singapore and other OECD countries, more than twice the world average. More than a third of those interviewed cited career prospects as the primary reason for leaving, and social injustice as the second reason.

With this staggering number of talented Malaysians abroad, the question has always been: how can the country continue to grow without them around? But the truth is that migration is a global phenomenon, and all developing countries are facing this problem equally. The best way to tackle the issue is to accept that cross-border movement is inevitable. People will move to where they feel opportunities exist, and trying to stem this tide may be futile.

The more pertinent things to ask are: first, how can Malaysia be so attractive that its citizens would prefer staying back? And second, even if they were to move abroad, how would it be possible for them to contribute from wherever they are, to the development of the country? The first issue is something Talent Corporation is trying to tackle, but it cannot do this alone given that it is the structural problems of Malaysia that need working on – if the education system was improved, economic barriers of cronyism and corruption removed to allow for greater opportunities, and the handling of the police force was more systematic, for example, things might change in the minds of those intending to migrate.

However, the assumption that Malaysians cannot help the country by being away must also be questioned. One of the best tools at our disposal in helping to open up minds is the Internet. Because we have a fairly high Internet penetration rate at 60%, and an equally high social media penetration rate of 91% among those who have access to the Internet, the power of online organisation should not be underestimated. This is precisely the medium within which overseas Malaysians can, and already have been, contributing to. Writing articles or using the medium of video is just one way of doing it.
The experience of overseas Malaysians in their respective fields of interest is an important resource that ought to be tapped into. All around the world, Malaysian experts exist in a variety of fields including medicine, engineering, the arts, and science, all of which are areas that will be needed to expand our own economy in the immediate and long-term future. These professionals can contribute to Malaysia by either conducting trainings for locals, or building networks with Malaysians for transfer of knowledge.

MyOverseasVote, a group of overseas Malaysians advocating for their right to vote in the elections, believe that Malaysian citizens overseas can be engaged “in charting the future course of the country”. As such, they are bringing legal proceedings against the Election Commission, challenging the Election (Registration of Electors) Regulations 2002 that only members of the Armed Forces, public servants, students and their spouses living overseas are eligible to register and vote as absent voters.

One argument against overseas voting is that because they are not physically present in Malaysia, and are therefore not paying taxes to the Malaysian government, they should not have a right to determine policies and plans for citizens within the country. (Hui Mei add here: I still pay Cukai Taksiran & Cukai Pintu every half of year even i dont live in the country right now!)

However, this is a fallacy, given that many Malaysians abroad do harbour hopes of returning to the country. They may also have vested interests within their home land for their parents and relatives who still live in Malaysia.

Can overseas Malaysians contribute? It is my opinion that it is a resounding yes. Especially for the 600,000 Malaysians living in Singapore, it is likely that they form an extremely important pool of influence and opinion-shaping that would be crucial for the future. Coming from all over Malaysia, they are more likely to return for Chinese New Year, other festivities, or to vote, given the proximity of the country to home.

In one sense, Malaysia can be likened to a lover who can make or break your heart. It is hoped that the social and political movements of change taking place in and outside of the country will help to eventually convince overseas Malaysians that they, too, still have a crucial role to play in charting the course of the country forward.

‘Idle No More’ walk for Sabahans to voice out changes

‘Idle No More’ walk for Sabahans to voice out changes

The walk which will start on February 22, (Friday) at Tambunan town and will end on February 24 at the Pagansakan Hall, Inobong, Penampang at about 2 pm.

The initiator of the walk, Anne Lasimbang said that she invite members of society to join in the walk to show their solidarity that changes in the country does not depend on politicians only but the ordinary people can also voice out what they want.

KOTA KINABALU: ‘Idle No More’, a 60 kilometres walk from Tambunan to Penampang is organised to give an opportunity for ordinary people to talk on issues that affect the indigenous people of Sabah.

The initiator of the walk, Anne Lasimbang, said, so far 20 people have indicated to join in the walk which will start at 9 am on February 22, (Friday) at Tambunan town and will end on February 24 at the Pagansakan Hall, Inobong, Penampang at about 2 pm.

“Since the election is coming very soon, we can see many politicians from the government and opposition parties talking about issues involving the indigenous people in Sabah. When the politicians talk, we are only the listeners.

“This walk will give the opportunity to ordinary people to talk on various issues that affect our people. It will be a sign of solidarity that Sabahans need changes to talk about what they want,” said Lasimbang in a press conference at Tang Dynasty Park Hotel, yesterday.

She added that ‘Idle No More’ is her individual initiative inviting members of society to join in the walk to show their solidarity that changes in the country does not depend on politicians only but the ordinary people can also voice out what they want.

The objective of ‘Idle No More’ walk is to give each individual something to do to contribute to changes, giving ordinary people the opportunity to deliver a clear message that the future of Sabah is not decides by politicians only but also by the people as a whole and to raise issues that affect the indigenous people of Sabah.

“This walk will start with prayers and reading of a declaration before flag off. First stop on the first day will be at Masjid Sekolah Menangah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tambunan where Muslim participants can perform their Friday prayers there. Then we will continue to the other check points namely, Mansakob Waterfall, Gunung Alab Restaurant, Gunung Emas, Kampung Tudan junction and overnight at Community Learning Centre (CLC) Togudon, Penampang.

“The second day, we will continue our slow walk to four check points, namely in Moyog, Motung-Lotung Kibunut Road, Sangai-Sangai Notorus Tagal Hut and overnight at Babagon Tagal Hut,” she said, adding the authorities have been informed about the programme and a medical team has set up to ensure the safety of the participants.

On the third day, the walk will be continue after Catholic Sunday prayers in the morning at Gawir Madsiang Hall before the last stop at 2 pm at Pagansakan Hall in Inobong for a closing ceremony.

During the closing ceremony, participants will hand over their declaration to the community leaders so that they can continue spreading the message to the other people throughout Sabah.

Lasimbang said she is optimistic the event will be successful because she have participated in a similar event in 1985 when Tan Sri Pairin Kitingan was sacked from Berjaya.

“When Pairin was sacked from Berjaya, we walked and drove from Penampang to Tambunan to show our support for him and the symbolic walk was successful.

“This time, we will start from Tambunan because our Huguan Siou is from there. We want to show through the ‘Idle No More’ walk that we want to be heard. Sabah is a rich State, but development has caused our lands to be seized and even citizenship are being given out without going to proper legal process,” she added.

Lasimbang said there will be environment activists and representatives from various religious groups joining the walk, as they will be praying according to their respective faith.

Also present at the press conference yesterday was Nasiri Sabiah from Pacos Trust, who will be joining Lasimbang for the walk."

Some Ironic Facts

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stan CH Lee - Malaysian at heart. Now freezing my butt off in Toronto. Until early January 2013, I communicate and express myself mainly through drawings and pictures, not much different from the caveman of yore when I was a firm believer in the adage “A picture is worth a thousand words”.I used to be a storyboard artist, cartoonist, airbrush artist, 3D animator and perspective artist and still cannot resist the urge to doodle and squiggle. But I wanted to put a finger (2 fingers?) on the collective pulse of the nation and share my thoughts with all and sundry. Then I discovered, some things are better said in words.

And please feel free to like and share my articles and drawings.
If you wish to use it for publications, please write in for official permission.

"Negara Ku"

Yesterday i attended a public speaking session in Damansara. When members of D'Utama Toastmasters Club singing "Negara Ku" (which is a normal practise for D'Utama Toastmaster to sing in the beginning of every meeting), i tried to control my tears from dropping as my heart feels very pain, my mind reflecting what has happened to my country...i dnt call myself patriotic, but Malaysia is my country, a land where i was born n grown up!

It is heartfeltly painful to see her natural resources hv bn in vain, her beautiful nature has been destructed and my fellow Malaysians hv bn robbed even by the regime in bright daylight until to the extence some of them have got no feeling. I really hope there could be more and more Malaysians can see through that they can still do something to return Malaysia a clean, green n safe land . With Solidarity n the People of the nation work diligently, Malaysia can really be better than all so-called first world countries and to become one of the best countries to live in! I really hope the number of all votes voting for CHANGE is able to outnumber than far than common folks's imagination number of ghosts that hv bn created! Every BERSIH vote is so significant in resuming the original face of Malaysia. My fellow Malaysians, please just make the best of your efforts, only this time, to come out/fly back to vote. Malaysia is calling her children Home...save her...

We are all Malaysians

i pasted the writing that i read on FB here.

Suara cicit Tunku Abdul Rahman(东姑的曾孙) - Sharyn Lisa Shufiyan

"Both my parents are Malay. My mum’s heritage includes Chinese, Thai and Arab, while my dad is Minangkabau. Due to my skin colour, I am often mistaken for a Chinese.

I do get annoyed when people call me Ah Moi or ask me straight up “Are you Chinese or Malay”

Like, why does it matter? Before I used to answer “Malay” but now I’m trying to consciously answer Malaysian instead.

There’s this incident from primary school that I remember till today. Someone told me that I will be called last during Judgement Day because I don’t have a Muslim name. Of course, I was scared then but now that I’m older, I realise that a name is just a name. It doesn’t define you as a good or bad person and there is definitely no such thing as a Muslim name. You can be named Rashid or Ali and still be a Christian.

I’ve heard of the 1Malaysia concept, but I think we don’t need to be told to be united. We’ve come such a long way that it should already be embedded in our hearts and minds that we are united. Unfortunately, you can still see racial discrimination and polarisation. There is still this ethno-centric view that the Malays are the dominant group and their rights must be protected, and non Malays are forever the outsiders.

For the concept to succeed, I think the government should stop with the race politics. It’s tiring, really. We grew up with application forms asking us to tick our race. We should stop painting a negative image of the other races, stop thinking about ‘us’ and ‘them’ and focus on ‘we’, ‘our’ and ‘Malaysians’.

No one should be made uncomfortable in their own home. A dear Chinese friend of mine said to me once, “I don’t feel patriotic because I am not made to feel like Malaysia is my home, and I don’t feel an affinity to China because I have never lived there.

I know some baby Nyonya friends who can trace their lineage back hundreds of years. I’m a fourth generation Malaysian. If I am Bumiputra, why can’t they be, too? Clearly I have issues with the term.

I think the main reason why we still can’t achieve total unity is because of this ‘Malay rights’ concept. I’d rather ‘Malay rights’ be replaced by human rights. So unless we get rid of this Bumiputra status, or reform our views and policies on rights, we will never achieve unity.

For my merdeka wish, I’d like for Malaysians to have more voice, to be respected and heard. I wish that the government would uphold the true essence of parliamentary democracy. I wish for the people to no longer fear and discriminate against each other, to see that we are one and the same.

I wish that Malaysia would truly live up to the tourism spin of Malaysia truly Asia."

Arul, Parti Sosialis Malaysia: DUN Semenyih (N24)

I have personally known ARUL since at least 15 years ago. I see Arul as one who really cares for the People and he has been working on the ground together with the people, especially the suppressed.

Arul, the Secretary General of Parti Sosialis Malaysia and a Human Rights Activist will be offering himself as a candidate in DUN Semenyih(N24) in the next GE13!

Parti Sosialis Malaysia, Semenyih

While there are some people fighting for media exposure,
Arul has long chosen to stay with and work together with the roots.

- 55 complaints against employers for not implementing minimum wage or manipulating such as allowances are added to make up the minimum wage, employee provident fund not contributed, work hours increased, work load increased, migrant workers are not paid minimum wage and transport facilities withdrawn.

-why is there no monitoring on the implementation from the KSM side?

-employers are asking the workers to show circular on the minimum wage act.  Why are they not aware?-why now the migrant workers are burden with Levi? Is it a punishment, why the discrimination?-why not the government help the 4,500 SMEs to enable them pay their workers the minimum wage?-how many times can a company appeal to postpone the implementation?

-can the employers force foreign workers to sign (restructured) agreement that gives them less salary?

JBU: Malaysian voice fm Ottawa, Canada

Sesi temu duga JBU bersama Zeti Harris, warga Malaysia di Ottawa, Kanada.

JBU: Apakah latar belakang anda (umur, asal usul, pekerjaan)?

JBU: Ada pesanan lain?

++++

JBU interviews Zeti Harris, a Malaysian based in Ottawa, Canada.

JBU: What is your background (age, hometown, profession)?
Zeti: I'm 42 year old Malaysian Malay, born and raised in KL.

JBU: When did you migrate from Malaysia?
Zeti: I left Malaysia in 1997.

JBU: Why did you migrate from Malaysia?
Zeti: I married a Canadian and have set up home here in Ottawa.

JBU: Any plans to head back to Malaysia?
Zeti: As sad as it sounds, I have no plans to head back to Malaysia in the near future but, God knows.

JBU: Do you have any message of hope for Malaysia?
Zeti: Malaysians deserve a great leader who practices what he preaches, celebrates unity and strives for excellence. “Seek knowledge from the Cradle to the Grave “

JBU: Anything else to add?
Zeti: I have always been proud of Malaysia being a multi-racial country. We celebrate different religious celebrations (Eid, CNY, Christmas, Deepavali, etc) but yet, we remain the best of friends regardless.

We enjoy each other's "open houses", a concept so foreign to people elsewhere. This is a beauty in itself where we learn and respect each other's religion, culture and tradition.

Sadly, our political leaders of the country do not celebrate this and choses instead to divide us.

Fly Home, Fly Home, Fly Home to Vote!

Fly Home, Fly Home, Fly Home to Vote! Malaysian diasporas, we need you to fly...

Have you ever been suspicious why the regime suddenly becomes so understanding and generously offers the convenience of "overseas postal voters" for overseas Malaysians? I personally have decided to fly back from Switzerland to cast my vote in person in Malaysia...  ...I don´t want mind jadi hantu!

************************************

"There are more than a million Malaysians living overseas from a population of about 28 million people – enough to make a real difference come election day."

Bersih Shanghai via Global Bersih 3.0:  "There are estimated 400,000 Malaysians residing in Singapore and growing number of people are planning to go back and vote.  There are estimated 10,000 Malaysians in Shanghai and nearby cities, could we have more than 5,000 back home and vote?  The Country needs you!"

Fly Back and Vote, my overseas fellow Malaysians, for the once-in-a-generation opportunity for change!  ...terlalu banyak hantu Anak-Anak Malaysia kena lawan lah!!!   If you don´t, perhaps yours will become one of those hantus...

A message posted by Daniel Liew on JomBalikUndi:

“For those Malaysians who are in overseas. If you can come back and vote during the GE13, it will be very much appreciated. We need a change in our Malaysian Government. Vote for Pakatan Rakyat (PKR, DAP, PAS) during the GE13. Every vote counts. Try to avoid the Election Commission (EC) online/postal vote if possible. Most of us don't trust the EC online/postal vote after discovering there are registrations frauds (eg.: a person had never registered to vote is automatically being registered as a voter in EC) within the EC itself."

BN, are you ready for the new wave?

Stan Ch Lee 19 February 2013

Stormy waters ahead

As the good ship Malaysia sails into stormy waters, at its helm, long commandeered by the Pirates of the CariBN(Be End), the pirates are running riot, looting like there is no tomorrow. And panicking because, for them, when tomorrow comes, it is time for them to sail into the sunset. Or walk the plank.

The winds of change blow strong, howling like a banshee’s call. A mutiny is brewing in the galley. Everything is falling apart. The shipleaks badly, taking in water at every turn. Every remedial action taken has backfired badly like cannon balls richocheting, adding to the total disarray on deck. With a Captain and his Pirates still stuck with a mindset and behaviour that belongs more to the 15th century, navigating and steering this ship to safe harbour in the digital age is going to be a huge challenge, bogged down and overloaded as they are by their baggages and skeletons.

With the ominous dark clouds overhead and the thunders rumbling, the winds are whipping up a maelstrom ahead. If they are not careful they will be sucked in to this whirpool leading into a bottomless pit. The waters are choppy. The ship is buffeted by the elements, some unseen. Bobbing and wobbling like a cork. There is real danger of a full capsize as the ship takes in more water. The Pirates  are running helter skelter as thay need more hands on deck, bailing out all and sundry. They desperately need help to weather the storm which threatens to unleash an unprecedented Tsunami on them. Around it, the flotsam and jetsam of displaced humanity reaches desperately for assistance, barely keeping their nose above waters. The meagre BRIM life rafts and inadequate lifelines hardly sufficient in these shark infested waters. The feeding frenzy is about to begin as the ship careens over the crest of the old wave and goes into freefall over the trough before the next big wave. The view from the top must be terrifying as it renders the Captain and those aligned to him incapable of sensible action.

BN are you ready for the next wave?”

The question now is “BN are you ready for the next wave?”

This new wave comes not with guns, cannons, parangs, knives or kerises. They do not threaten to beat you up or shout you down. They do not have the muscles or guns or ammunition. They come in peace and they want stability. They have no need for instruments of war.

Instead, they are armed with nothing more explosive than flowers, candles, cell phones, laptops, tablets, and access to information. And knowledge, long suppressed on this ship Malaysia. Sound argument is their weapon of choice. For every story that the MSM puts out, the lie is exposed almost immediately with well researched and backed up counterpoints. Pictures and videos go viral in an instance. It s no longer possible to hide the truth. Citizen journalism is running circles around the MSM, that dinosaur BN propanganda mouth piece still weighed down by political interference and agendas. For every paid MSM reporter, there are thousands of Citizen journalists all ready and willing to chip in to do their part to debunk the lies being spun and passed off as news.

Of course, after the BN was almost deleted in the 2008 GE, they wised up and started building their own team of Paid Cybertroopers. Unfortunately, for BN, these Cybertroopers seem to be spouting nothing more than profanities and lots of “kekekeke”s, whatever that means. Last I heard, even these Cybertroopers are grumbling over not being paid. Quite a far cry from the new wave who do it out of a sense of duty to the country. (Good observation, Stan, i also find those BN Cybertroopers are quite Illiterate as they could speak only foul languages)

The information super highways are rife with these new age warriors who deftly surf the wave of information. All pervasive and deeply immersive, this is the wave, the Tsunami that will rock the ship Malaysia, this the change that will come whatever BN does. This is the new battleground in the fight to take control over the ship before it hits a rock or gets sucked into the bottomless pit. We, the new wave have spread and grown, causing ripples way, way beyond the borders of Malaysia as clearly demonstrated in the Global Bersih movement. Way beyond the reach and grasp of these 15th Century Pirates. We are ready to swarm them. As they fumble with their crude weapons of violence and threats, and money money money, the call goes out to them.

BN!  Ready or not here we come. And we are ready to rock your votes.

AirAsia X offers cheap seats for voters abroad
Aidila Razak, KiniBiz | 2:41PM Feb 20, 2013

"Call it national service or marketing savvy, but AirAsia X is offering cheap flights for Malaysians abroad to come home to vote.

While the election date is still uncertain, AirAsia X says that Malaysians living overseas who are registered voters can be sure of promo prices even if they book last minute.

Azran-Osman-RaniConfirming this, its chief executive officer Azran Osman-Rani was, however, short on details.

“We will make an official announcement with all the details when elections are called,” Azran said when contacted.

Azran indicated that there will be a limit on the number of seats on offer although this and promotional fares are still being ironed out.

“There wasn’t a lot of research made before the decision. We made it because we felt that voting is an important civic duty for everybody,” he said.

The AirAsia X team is still working out a booking mechanism, he said, but it is likely to be done separate to the existing website.

In an interview with Radio Australia, organiser for the Jom Balik Undi campaign William De Cruz said that it is understood that booking is most likely to be conducted through a dedicated hotline and email.

AirAsia X, part of the AirAsia group, flies to Gold Coast, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Taipei, Chengdu, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Beijing, Osaka, Tokyo, Kathmandu, Jeddah and Seoul.

However, Azran told Malaysian diaspora portal Outstation.my that the promotio
n is unlikely to be extended to Jeddah as those flights are sold out for umrah packages.

He also said that it is unclear if the offer may be extended to other AirAsia destinations, as AirAsia X is run as a separate airline.

The World Bank estimates that a million Malaysians were living and working abroad in 2010.

It is unclear how many are registered voters, but the Election Commission said that 2,485 have applied to be postal voters under the new regulations.

This does not include the 2,651 Malaysian students and civil servants living overseas who are registered as postal voters.

Those who do not register as postal voters by midnight of the day of Parliament dissolution will need to return home in order to vote.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak needs to call for snap polls before April 28, at which point Parliament dissolves automatically. Polls have to take place within 60 days of dissolution.
